University of the Third Age

Description of Organisation:
The University of the Third Age (U3A) movement is a unique and exciting organisation which provides, through its U3As, life-enhancing and life-changing opportunities. Retired and semi-retired people come together and learn together, not for qualifications but for its own reward: the sheer joy of discovery!

Members share their skills and life experiences: the learners teach and the teachers learn, and there is no distinction between them.

The U3A movement is supported by its national organisation, the Third Age Trust.

Services Offered: Swansea U3A now has over 1500 members. We have weekly lectures and over 100 Learning Groups ranging from Anthropology to Youniverse Explorer.

We also hold social events including coffee mornings, outings, St. David’s day events, quizzes and Christmas lunches.

Glamorgan Family History Society – Swansea Branch

Vivian Hall Antiques Club

Vivian Hall antiques club. The club aims to help everyone gain pleasure and knowledge from furniture, pictures, glass & metalware etc; all of which can be found at antiques fairs and shops both locally and throughout the UK. Meetings take the form of guest speakers, often local, who provide talks on a vast range of topics, including local history, using slides or computer presentations. Many bring items with them. They will look at items brought in by members/visitors. Refreshments are always provided when visitors & members can chat with the guest and each other, and there is usually a raffle.

Swansea Eastside Historical Society

Local History Society based in St. Thomas dealing specifially with the history of the eastside of Swansea. We have some 40 members at this present time. We invite speakers to attend on various occasions to discuss local history, these discussions also include many other areas and talks and are usually accompanied by slides or films. Our weekly meetings give members a chance to mix and discuss forthcoming events. New members are always welcome.

Historical Association: Swansea Branch

The Historical Association is an independent charity that supports the study and enjoyment of history (including local history). It believes that historical awareness is essential for the 21st-century citizen. The Swansea Branch of the Association is dedicated to promoting history in south-west Wales and presents historical talks at 11am on the 3rd Saturday of each month at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea.

Mumbles and West Cross Photographic Society

The Mumbles and West Cross Photographic Society meets at the Tircoed (Old Fire Station), Fairwood Road, West Cross. Our Annual Print Exhibition takes place during the summer. Our purpose is to meet up with a programme covering digital imaging techniques, both black and white and colour. We invite guest speakers, demonstrations and practical evenings, competitions within the club and with other clubs. We have about 20 members, from beginners to experienced photographers, and even if you are not a practising photographer you will find something of interest. Our premises in West Cross are easily accessible from a level car park. Members come from all areas of the city and we are particularly known for having a friendly atmosphere. The aim is to enjoy our photography. Come and meet us any Wednesday and you will be made most welcome.

Services Offered: Digital imaging techniques in black and white and colour. We invite guest speakers, demonstrations, practical evenings, competitions within the club and with other clubs.

Western Front Association

The Western Front Association is a national / international historical association, with the aim of remembering the Great War and has a south wales branch. The Branch is based Cardiff and we regularly told meetings. We meet at the Fairwater conservative club, Ely Road, Fairwater, Cardiff. All are welcome. We have generally 30 – 40 attendees at each meeting. You do not have to be a WFA member to attend our meetings. Ty Fforest Community House

TyFforest is a community house for the people of Fforesthall and Ravenhill. It is run by volunteers from the local community. We provide activities for children and young people, adult education, volunteer placements to develop your skills, an over 50s club, and plenty more. Swansea Astronomical Society

Meetings with speakers, which take place at 7pm in lecture room 2 of Fulton House at Swansea University College, are held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, from October until May inclusive
