Swansea U3A

 

University of the Third Age

Description of Organisation:
The University of the Third Age (U3A) movement is a unique and exciting organisation which provides, through its U3As, life-enhancing and life-changing opportunities. Retired and semi-retired people come together and learn together, not for qualifications but for its own reward: the sheer joy of discovery!

Members share their skills and life experiences: the learners teach and the teachers learn, and there is no distinction between them.

The U3A movement is supported by its national organisation, the Third Age Trust.

Services Offered: Swansea U3A now has over 1500 members. We have weekly lectures and over 100 Learning Groups ranging from Anthropology to Youniverse Explorer.

We also hold social events including coffee mornings, outings, St. David’s day events, quizzes and Christmas lunches.

Friends of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery

At present the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is closed for refurbishment but is still operating an “Offsite” programme of exhibitions, talks, workshops and other events in various locations in Swansea.

The Friends are actively supporting the Gallery during the closure period and are also busy running its own programme of events.

Opening Times: At present the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is closed for refurbishment but is still operating an “Offsite” programme of exhibitions, talks, workshops and other events in various locations in Swansea.

Affiliations/Qualifications :The Friends of the Glynn Vivian are members of the British Association of Friends of Museums (BAFM).

Cost of Membership/Charges: Annual Membership costs £15 per person or £20 for two people living at the same address

Publications Produced: The Friends produce a Newsletter three times a year consisting of news, art reviews and other information concerning both the Gallery and the Friends. To celebrate their 50th Anniversary in 2008 the Friends produced a publication "A Passion for Art", a history of the Friends written by Kirstine Brander Dunthorne, which is available by mail order from the contact details below or by visiting the Friends website.

As a Friend you are able to attend regular lectures and are invited to exhibition previews at the Gallery. You are also entitled to a 10% discount on purchases made at the Gallery shop. Also all Friends receive a Newsletter three times a year.

Glamorgan Family History Society – Swansea Branch

Encourages and promotes family history and local history research to anyone with roots in the historic county of Glamorgan.  Aims include to assist members in their private research; to encourage the transcription and preservation of records of family history and the deposit of original documents of value in approved institutions; to publish papers of genealogical value and interests; to establish, to mutual advantage, relations with other organisations interested in genealogy and allied subjects; to maintain a library and publish a journal regularly.

The Swansea branch meets on the 2nd Monday of each month in the Committee room at County Hall, Oystermouth Road, Swansea. Meetings start at 7pm with guest speakers on a variety of topics each month

Swansea Eastside Historical Society

Local History Society based in St. Thomas dealing specifially with the history of the eastside of Swansea. We have some 40 members at this present time. We invite speakers to attend on various occasions to discuss local history, these discussions also include many other areas and talks and are usually accompanied by slides or films. Our weekly meetings give members a chance to mix and discuss forthcoming events. New members are always welcome.

Description of Organisation: Talks and lectures on various local history subjects. We run various historical trips during the year and of course the Christmas Dinner not to mention refreshments supplied at every Tuesday morning meeting.

Historical Association: Swansea Branch

The Historical Association is an independent charity that supports the study and enjoyment of history (including local history). It believes that historical awareness is essential for the 21st-century citizen. The Swansea Branch of the Association is dedicated to promoting history in south-west Wales and presents historical talks at 11am on the 3rd Saturday of each month at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea.

Swansea Civic Society is committed to working locally towards promoting a quality, attractive, safe and sustainable built environment. Glamorgan History Society

Concerned over the last fifty years with nurturing the study of all aspects of the history of Glamorgan within the wider context of the history of Wales. The principal activity of the Society is the publication of the local history journal Morgannwg which contains research articles, archaeological notes, book reviees and other material related to the historic county.
