University of the Third Age

Description of Organisation:
The University of the Third Age (U3A) movement is a unique and exciting organisation which provides, through its U3As, life-enhancing and life-changing opportunities. Retired and semi-retired people come together and learn together, not for qualifications but for its own reward: the sheer joy of discovery!

Members share their skills and life experiences: the learners teach and the teachers learn, and there is no distinction between them.

The U3A movement is supported by its national organisation, the Third Age Trust.

Services Offered: Swansea U3A now has over 1500 members. We have weekly lectures and over 100 Learning Groups ranging from Anthropology to Youniverse Explorer.

We also hold social events including coffee mornings, outings, St. David’s day events, quizzes and Christmas lunches.

Friends of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery

At present the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is closed for refurbishment but is still operating an “Offsite” programme of exhibitions, talks, workshops and other events in various locations in Swansea.

The Friends are actively supporting the Gallery during the closure period and are also busy running its own programme of events.

Opening Times: At present the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is closed for refurbishment but is still operating an “Offsite” programme of exhibitions, talks, workshops and other events in various locations in Swansea.

Affiliations/Qualifications :The Friends of the Glynn Vivian are members of the British Association of Friends of Museums (BAFM).

Cost of Membership/Charges: Annual Membership costs £15 per person or £20 for two people living at the same address

Publications Produced: The Friends produce a Newsletter three times a year consisting of news, art reviews and other information concerning both the Gallery and the Friends. To celebrate their 50th Anniversary in 2008 the Friends produced a publication "A Passion for Art", a history of the Friends written by Kirstine Brander Dunthorne, which is available by mail order from the contact details below or by visiting the Friends website.

As a Friend you are able to attend regular lectures and are invited to exhibition previews at the Gallery. You are also entitled to a 10% discount on purchases made at the Gallery shop. Also all Friends receive a Newsletter three times a year.

Llangiwg Community Association

The Llangiwg Community Association. The main purpose of the charity is to preserve and conserve the former church at Llangiwg for the enjoyment and benefit of the present and future generations.

The church is grade 2 listed and dates back to the 6th Century. The church was de-consecrated in 2004 and was purchased by the community in 2007. A community association (Friends of Llangiwg) was established in 2006, to promote social and community activity, with the Llangiwg Community Association formed in 2008 to undertake the responsibility of the building, its conservation and protection for future generations.

Part of this responsibility is to educate and to increase access to the church for the wider community, and through this, to increase awareness and to educate the local, regional and national community in the appreciation of the cultural, historic and natural environment of the area.

Services Offered: Regular monthly Friends of Llangiwg meetings began to be held at the IVY BUSH HOTEL, Pontardawe on the THIRD TUESDAY of the month. All are welcome.

Sketty and District Horticultural Society

The purpose of the Society is to provide information on a wide range of gardening and related topics, and to provide friendship. Our members (currently120) cover a wide spectrum of interests and knowledge, but all share an enjoyment of gardens and beauty of nature.

Description of Organisation:
Generally we have a speaker, some refreshments, and then the opportunity to ask questions of our speaker. In April we hold our Spring Show, and have a buffet. This is a popular evening, and the display of spring flowers en masse is truly beautiful. Members are welcome to enter their flowers and potted plants, which are sorted into various classes before judging takes place. At Christmas we have a Social evening, when members bring along their surplus plants, which can be purchased at nominal prices. We organise coach trips to gardens of particular interest usually twice a year. We have been able to arrange discounts with local businesses for your gardening needs.

Cost of Membership/Charges: Annual subscription is £10, which includes refreshments at each meeting. We charge £3 to attend the Spring Show and £1.50 for the Christmas Social, where members are also asked to bring along a plate of food. A raffle is held in April (at the Spring Show) and at the Christmas Social. The cost of the raffle ticket is included in the price of the ticket for each event.

Vivian Hall Antiques Club

Vivian Hall antiques club. The club aims to help everyone gain pleasure and knowledge from furniture, pictures, glass & metalware etc; all of which can be found at antiques fairs and shops both locally and throughout the UK. Meetings take the form of guest speakers, often local, who provide talks on a vast range of topics, including local history, using slides or computer presentations. Many bring items with them. They will look at items brought in by members/visitors. Refreshments are always provided when visitors & members can chat with the guest and each other, and there is usually a raffle.

Historical Association: Swansea Branch

The Historical Association is an independent charity that supports the study and enjoyment of history (including local history). It believes that historical awareness is essential for the 21st-century citizen. The Swansea Branch of the Association is dedicated to promoting history in south-west Wales and presents historical talks at 11am on the 3rd Saturday of each month at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea.

Membership fees: £10 for waged individuals; £5 concessionary membership; £15 family/household membership. Membership becomes renewable at the following AGM.

Description of Organisation: An independent charity supporting the study and enjoyment of history. The HA is the voice for history. The HA is a supporter of local history. The Association believes that historical awareness is essential for the 21st-century citizen.
